I encourage intelligent comments so please think before you type. I welcome criticism just so long as it is relevant. Please remember that I attack concepts, not people. Im reffering to a stamp you made about cat colors being a color not a disease, like black jaguars and golden tigers. Since you disabled the comments.

#1 naturally occurring mutations like melantistics cats (black jaguars or white lions) it is simply a different color and does not effect the health of the animal.
#2 golden or white tigers are NOT natural and are NOT healthy. They are the product of intensive inbreeding done by humans for that color, and often result in deformities, low birth rate, and diseases.

Thank you.

Hello Shelby,

Thank you for voicing your opinions. =)

Current research supports the claim that melanistic jaguars and leucistic lions are naturally occuring, and you are absolutely correct that all documented golden tabby tigers are the result of mass inbreeding and out-crossing.  The claim that white tigers are unnatural, however, is not wholly accurate.  You are correct that many white tigers are the result of irresponsible and commercialised breeding, but only because the tigers have been bred from a small gene pool; the white gene is not the source of the problem.

A 2013 genetic analysis concluded that the white gene in tigers is genetically distinct from deformities and other health issues.  In addition, the study revealed that the white gene is common in "pedigree" Bengal tigers, but is seldom expressed.

If you don’t mind my asking, where are the sources for the low birth weight, deformities, and diseases claims?

The gene is naturally present but you would almost never have a naturally occurring, healthy, non-inbred white tiger. It has happened, but it is extremely rare. Now, white tigers are created by generations of *severe* inbreeding in captivity resulting in deformities diseases etc.……………

Hello Shelby,

I acknowledge the fact that many white tigers are inbred in my stamp’s artist comments, stamp's cited sources, and this conversation's previous statement.  That said, I think there has been a misunderstanding.   The purpose of my stamp is not to encourage the inbreeding of animals or production of white tiger cubs, but to allow healthy white tigers to breed with healthy, normally colour tigers to increase the tiger population.

Thanks for sending the sources. I’ve actually read all them, and I'm well-aware of Kenny the tiger, so I‘m glad we know the same information. The claim that white tigers have a high infant mortality rate is presently unsupported, and is used by opponents of all white tiger breeding, such as BCR.  The stamp’s sentiments are similar, but not identical to opinions of the FCF. FCF supports the production of white cubs, but I assert that coat colour should never be the primary goal of feline breeding, be the tiger white, orange, or other.
